"Sustainability is key in every step of brewing our Troost beer."
Dutch cities such as Amsterdam and Utrecht have a wide range of breweries. It’s worth taking a moment to explore your options before setting out, so you can make the most of your visit.
A unique beer spot at Cornelis Troostplein in Amsterdam
While many beer enthusiasts know Brouwerij ’t IJ, Amsterdam has so much more to offer when it comes to craft breweries. Among the city’s top beer spots are Walhalla Brewery, Poesiat & Kater and Troost Brewery, located at the Cornelis Troostplein in the De Pijp neighborhood.
The story of Troost Brewery began at its location on Cornelis Troostplein 21, in De Pijp, one of Amsterdam’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Housed in a beautifully preserved 1920s monumental building, the site originally served as a nunnery and school complex, closely connected to the nearby Vredeskerk (Peace Church).
The building also has a layered and complex history. The structure was confiscated during World War II by the German occupiers. During the war, it was used by the NSB (Dutch National Socialist Movement) and later became a barracks for both the Dutch SS and the Sicherheitsdienst. These difficult chapters of the past make this building not only a place to enjoy craft beer, but also a location with significant wartime heritage in Amsterdam.
Troost Brewery De Pijp
The three owners of Amsterdam's Café Kostverloren, brothers Hendrik and Frits de Jong and their business partner Jorrit Lootsma, had been looking for a location for a small brewery for some time. Tired of restrictive contracts with big-name breweries, the trio dreamed of starting a small-scale brewery in Amsterdam where they could brew and serve their own beer freely.
With minimal brewing experience but plenty of passion, they transformed the space into a brewpub where guests could enjoy beer brewed on-site. A chemistry student who worked at the café took on the brewing role, and after a lot of experimentation and hands-on learning, Troost Brewery De Pijp officially launched in 2013.
Today, the popular brewpub in De Pijp is known for its lively atmosphere, freshly brewed craft beer, tasty pub food, and weekly pub quizzes. While space constraints limit large-scale brewing at this location, the opening of a second Troost Brewery branch in Amsterdam allowed them to expand production and meet growing demand for their beers.
Troost Brewery Westergas
Just two years after opening their first location in De Pijp, Troost Brewery launched a second and significantly larger brewery and tasting room on the historic grounds of the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam-West. This venue, known as Troost Brewery Westergas, provided the perfect setting for installing a full-scale brewing system, complete with large stainless steel kettles on full display behind a large glass wall.
With increased brewing capacity, Troost could now supply its beers not only to its own locations, but also to bars and cafes across Amsterdam. The tasting room at Westergas quickly became a popular hangout, thanks to its relaxed vibe, outdoor terrace, and fresh, house-brewed beer.
Next to the entrance, you’ll find a small Troost beer shop where you can buy your favorite beers to take home, or to enjoy in the nearby Westerpark. But why leave? With a cold craft beer in hand and something from the tasty pub menu, like burgers, salads, or vegan bites, you’re in a good spot to enjoy Amsterdam’s local brewing scene.
Discover the historic Westergasfabriek site
Naturally, you should book a tour at Troost Brewery, but the entire historic Westergasfabriek site is an experience in itself. Originally built in 1885 to provide gas for the city’s streetlights, the Westergas site has since been transformed into one of Amsterdam’s cultural hotspots.
Seventeen historic industrial buildings have been carefully preserved and repurposed, now home to creative entrepreneurs, restaurants and theaters. Since the site's redevelopment in 2003, the area has also welcomed a green city park. With unique event venues and a vibrant atmosphere, the Westergasfabriek site is an ideal destination to explore, relax, and enjoy Amsterdam’s creative side.
On the opposite side of the city, the Oostergasfabriek was once a sister location. Today, one of its iconic buildings houses the Poesiat & Kater brewery, another excellent stop on your Amsterdam craft beer journey. Whether for the historic architecture or the beers, it’s well worth a visit.
